Medical Insurance

Families who are experiencing poverty are one short step away from tragedy in the event of illness, trauma, or serious injury. Shelter Them provides free medical insurance to our vulnerable families to guard against such situations.  Initiated by the Rwandan Government in 2004, Community Based Health Insurance (CBHI) was implemented to improve access to health care for the poorest and most vulnerable segments of the population. In particular, CBHI aims to reduce infant mortality rates in these communities. In 2023, Shelter Them paid medical insurance coverage for 81 families, safeguarding 400 individuals with access to reliable health care.  Access to effective and timely medical care for children and families  has greatly reduced the impact of injury or illness in Gateko, and  Shelter Them will continue to support its beneficiaries with CBHI.
